More About ‘The Secret’

I’ve read “Think And Grow Rich” several times. I’ve watched “The Secret.” I’ve been doing research into quantum theory and the law of attraction. And, something about all of it still bothers me.

What bothers me about all of it is the emphasis on “thought” over “action.” Well, it seems I’m not alone.

A group of marketers recently got together to discuss the marketing phenomenon that is “The Secret” because they believe there is a real danger in what is being taught in that movie, book and home study course. The discussion was recorded and can be found here:

Dave Lakhani, one of the panelists in the discussion, managed to put voice to how I truly feel about this whole matter at about 39 minutes, 18 seconds into the recording:

“The reality of the secret is, the reason you tend to think that you’re getting more of the things that you’re focused on when you have good thoughts is because you become aware of things. Your attention changes. And as your attention changes, you begin to see correlations, opportunities and ideas that you didn’t see before. It’s not that they didn’t exist or they suddenly appeared or that, you know, the wish fairy showed up. It just is that you begin to see ideas that you hadn’t possibly considered before and you begin to make connections and correlations.”

This is very close to something I wrote in one of my first articles on this blog. But Dave, I think, really put it much more clearly.

I believe there is value in a “mindset” of attraction, but not in a “law” of attraction. I know, I know… “That’s BLASPHEMY!” But, come on… what evidence can anyone present–scientific evidence–that positive thinking works all the time, every time, to get what you want in life? And more to the point, what great things were ever accomplished in this world without someone getting up off their duff and DOING something? I can’t think of any.

It’s great to think positively. It’s great to believe in a world of abundance. But at the end of the day, what matters is our actions. We must take action to bring about change… change in ourselves, change in our world, change in the lives of others.

What do you think?
