Would You Rather Die Than Get Help?

The following might seem to have nothing to do with building an Internet business. But please read it all the way through. I think the point will become obvious before you are done reading.

I was out on a bicycle ride with my family recently. There was a storm moving in and we were anxious to get home before the rain started falling. As we passed a pond near a wooded area close to our home, my wife spotted a cormorant bird near the edge of the pond acting a little weird.

Cormorants are swimming birds that dive underwater to catch their meals. They are known to stay underwater for long periods of time pursuing their dinner. Unlike some other water birds, though, their feathers can become water-logged very quickly. So, you’ll often see them standing at the edge of the water with their wings spread wide waiting for their feathers to dry so they can fly.

My wife stopped to take a closer look at the bird and saw that it had a girl’s hair band wrapped tightly around its beak. Now, take a look at this picture. See how wide the bird in the picture has to open its mouth to swallow its dinner? You think maybe a hair band around its beak might keep it from eating? Of course it would!

Although it looked like it would start raining at any moment, we decided to stop and see if we could help the poor bird. When I say “we” I mean me trying to catch the wild animal and render aid while my wife “directed” from a distance.

On my first attempt, the bird allowed me to get within two feet before it abruptly took off and glided to the other side — the wooded side — of the pond. It was too water-logged to get higher than a foot over the water, but it was plenty enough to get away from me.

For my second attempt, I had to walk around to the other side of the pond, into the woods, through the underbrush, brambles and sticker bushes, to get to where the bird was standing. This time, I only made it to five feet from the bird before it dove into the water.

It stayed under for quite a while. When it came back up, it was about 40 yards away. It walked up on to the bank and then jumped/flew a few feet up to the branch of a tree that was bent down close to the water. I started walking toward the bird.

I got to within about 10 feet of it when it started edging its way towards the end of the branch, getting ready to dive back into the water. I stopped. I sat down. I watched.

After a few minutes, the bird decided to ignore me and try to get the hair band off its beak. It started rubbing its beak on the branch it was perched on. It had the right idea, but it didn’t seem to be making much progress. So after about five minutes, I stood up and started moving toward the bird. It immediately stopped working on its beak and made ready to dive into the water again.

The bird had no intention of letting me help. And I had no intention of forcing myself on it or following it into the murk of the pond if it decided to run away again. So, I left. The bird would either get the band off of its beak, or it wouldn’t. It was out of my hands.

If the bird had been willing, it would have taken less than a minute for me to remove the obstacle to its ability to eat and sustain itself. But it wasn’t. It was dead set on doing it on its own.

Why?

It’s obvious. The bird was scared of me. In its mind, I was a predator out to eat it. It had no way of knowing otherwise.

This is the same situation new Internet business owners find themselves in when they’re having trouble making profits online. There’s no shortage of “gurus” who will offer to help. But which of them are sincere and which ones are predators who will take the money without delivering any real results? With no sure way to answer that question, many decide to go it on their own and figure things out themselves.

If you are in this position, then you have two options: 1) Do it yourself, make lots of mistakes, rack up debts and maybe, just maybe, figure things out and build a successful Internet business in a few years. 2) Find someone you can trust to show you how to build your Internet business, keep you out of debt and help you reach your goals in months instead of years.

I will be posting instructions, observations, suggestions and guidance right here on this blog for anyone wanting to build their own Internet business. What I post will be based on my own experience and knowledge. I’ll also be building tools to help me build my business that might also be useful to you. I’ll be writing about those tools and how to use them here on this blog. And I’ll be writing about some of the hard steps I had to take to get myself moving in the right direction after years of wandering around aimlessly, pretending to build a business online. As I’ve said before, all I was really doing then was creating a really low-paying, stressful J.O.B. for myself.

I would love to be able to keep you from repeating my mistakes. I would love to be able to help you acheive your Internet business goals. But what I will not do is chase you down and force my advice on you. I will not follow you into the brambles or into the murk of the pond if you insist on doing it your own way. The choice is yours and yours alone.

If you want to know what I have to say, if you want to learn the steps I’m taking to build and grow my Internet business, then sign up for my blog announcement list. The form is right there near the top right corner of this page. Just fill in your first name and your primary email address (no disposable addresses, please) and click the “Subscribe Now!” button. Once you’ve confirmed your subscription, you’ll begin receiving notices every time I post something new to this blog.

Read everything I write. Read everything I reference on other people’s blogs. And most importantly, put what you learn into action. If after a week of putting up with my ramblings you don’t think you’ve gotten what you need to help you build your own successful Internet business, then feel free to unsubscribe and accept my humble apologies for not meeting your expectations.

All I can do is make the offer. The rest is up to you. Until next time…

A New Year And New Rules

You probably noticed that I have strongly encouraged you to sign up for my new blog announcement list in all of the previous articles here (the form is near the top right corner of this page). The reason is that, except for my paid product lists, I will be purging all of my Internet business email lists in a week or two. So the only way for me to keep you updated will be through the new list. I hope you’ll choose to join me here.

(Note that the paid product lists will not receive blog update announcements. You must join this list if you want to keep up with what I’m doing here.)

Now, before you rush off to sign up for my list, there are a few rules you need to keep in mind:

1. You must whitelist my email address BEFORE signing up to make sure that you get the confirmation email and all of my blog update announcements. That address is announcements[at]internetbusinessbench[dot]com. If you don’t know, whitelisting means that you tell your email provider that you want to receive email messages from me. Depending on what ISP or web hosting service you use, that can be accomplished in any one of several different ways. Ask your ISP or hosting provider what you need to do.

2. No free email addresses. Also, I reserve the right to block email addresses associated with ISPs that generate an inordinate number of SPAM complaints. If you don’t have your own domain with an email address on your own hosting account, then you need to think about how serious you really are about starting and running an Internet business. When you’re ready, go get a hosting account here or at any of the dozens of other low cost hosting companies.

3. No AOL addresses. AOL has built a system that encourages people to click the SPAM button rather than the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every message I send. I am done dealing with SPAM complaints generated by AOL users too lazy to unsubscribe from newsletters they don’t want anymore.

4. No autoresponder addresses. This includes challenge/response autoresponders supposedly used to block SPAM. If you use one of these (useless, pointless) services, whitelist my address BEFORE you subscribe.

5. Just because you subscribe to my announcement list, does not mean that I am subscribing to yours. List members who send me unsolicited email messages — especially if you put the lame disclaimer at the bottom saying “This is not spam. You sent me an email I asked for so I get to send one back to you even though you didn’t ask me to.” — will be dropped from the list and banned from rejoining. No exceptions. This includes autoresponder messages (see #4 above).

6. This is my blog, not a discussion forum. Comments will be closed for most posts. However, trackbacks are welcomed. If you’d like to comment on anything I write here, post your comment on your own blog and include a trackback to the post on my blog. Don’t have your own blog? Get one. The WordPress blogging platform, like I use here on InternetBusinessBench.com, is a free download at WordPress.org. And if you don’t have your own hosting account, you can always use a free service like Blogger.com or WordPress.com.

7. How can you contact me if I don’t accept email messages or blog comments? You may contact me through my helpdesk at http://www.internetbusinessbench.com/helpdesk/ for valid business reasons only. Valid business reasons include support for products you have bought from me* and little else. Please do not use the helpdesk to ask for free advice. You’re going to get plenty of free advice just by reading this blog.

(*As long as your purchase includes support…check the sales page to make sure.)

8. Don’t ask me to promote your product or service through my helpdesk or email. The best way to get my attention is to use the trackback method in #6 above. I’ll see your post and if I like your blog I might give you special mention in a future blog post.

That’s it. Pretty simple, huh?

What? You say you feel these rules are Draconian? You think they’re unfair? Then go complain about it…ON YOUR OWN BLOG!

However, I hope you see how reasonable these rules are given that I’m trying to build an Internet business, not create a low paying job for myself. If you don’t see it yet, then I hope you’ll let me explain it to you in more detail on this blog in the days and weeks ahead.

It’s going to be a wild ride. I hope you’re ready.

The Focus Society

Want to know how personal development books written decades ago apply to you in the here-and-now? Look no farther than Chuck Bartok’s FocusSociety.com interactive talk show. Each week Chuck and his partners meet to discuss topics from the legendary books “Think And Grow Rich” and “The Master Key System.”

The discussions are hosted on the TalkShoe interactive podcast system and everyone is invited to attend and participate. I highly recommend it.

By the way, Chuck is also one of the principles behind BeginnersMarketingClass.com. The BMC (I love acronyms!) will have its grand re-opening this weekend, so be sure to check out all they have to offer!

Birthdays And Obituaries

It’s my birthday today! And I just read my obituary. :(

“Daniel J. Moran, 49, formerly of Louisville, died Monday, June 29, 1936.”

Well, it’s not actually me, but a gentleman with whom I share a name who was born in 1887 and died in 1936 at the age of 49. I’m 44 today. Sobering to think about how short life can be.

So, why waste one minute of that life doing anything other than what we were meant to do? We were meant to be happy and prosperous and to help others by spreading that happiness and prosperity.

I intend to do just that.

2008 is the year in which I will build a successful Internet business WITHOUT sacrificing time with my family and friends, WITHOUT sacrificing my health or my sanity, and WITHOUT allowing myself to be distracted and unfocused. I will do those things that advance my business and avoid those things that bring me further from realizing my goals.

If you’d like to come along for the ride, just sign up for my blog announcement list. The form is at the top right hand side of this page. I just need your first name and your primary email address. You’ll receive a short email whenever I post a new article here. I’ll be blogging about the exact steps I’m taking to build my Internet business from the ground up.

And although it’s my birthday today, I’d like to give you a present. It’s not quite ready yet (I’ll need just another day or two to finish it up), but if you’re on the announcement list for this blog, you’ll soon receive download instructions for your gift by email. I’m sure you’ll like it, so subscribe today!

What Is The Internet Business Bench?

My wife and I have a strategy for dealing with our sons when they start to misbehave. When all else fails and redirection just isn’t working, we send them to…

…THE BENCH!

(dun-dun-DAAAAHHHH)

We have them take a time-out and sit on the bench in the hall. The time-out gives the boys an opportunity to settle down and get themselves out of the middle of a situation so they can (hopefully) think about things objectively. Once the boys have had a moment to cool down, we explain clearly to them why they were sent to the bench and what we expect of them.

Of course, they are very smart and observant little dudes and they never miss an opportunity to turn the tables on Mom and Dad. For instance, a few months ago, my 4-year-old son told ME to go to the bench. He wanted me to take him and his brother to the park. I told him I was too busy to go right then. That’s when he said, “Daddy, you’re being mean. You should go to the bench!”

And you know what? He was right. I did need to go to the bench. I needed to step away from the work I was doing on my Internet business so that I could evaluate it objectively. I closed the laptop and he and his brother and I went to the park. We had a great time.

I took the next several months off from my Internet business so I could really think about what I was doing. It turns out that I didn’t have an Internet business after all. I just had a second job…working for myself! And, frankly, I wasn’t a very good boss. The benefits were lousy. The hours sucked. And once I figured out how much time I’d put into my business in 2007…well, let’s just say that the money I earned didn’t represent a very impressive return on investment.

But, instead of completely throwing in the towel, I decided to retool my Internet business. I thought…

“Hey… maybe instead of creating and maintaining free or even low-cost products that require my personal support, I should create simple, high-value products that are easy to understand and use.”

And then I thought…

“Ya know, instead of creating another job for myself, I really should create systems and procedures that anyone can follow.”

And finally I thought…

“Yeah… and once I’ve got those systems in place, I can stop playing lone wolf, martyr and all-around super stud (who happens to have no time for his wife and kids), become an effective Internet business owner, and start looking for outside resources to help me build my business.”

Genius…pure genius. And also what many people have been trying to tell me for almost a year now. People like…

James Brausch, Tim Ferriss, Fred Black, Terry Dean, Richard Lee, Robert Phillips and Aaron Brandon.

So, long story short, AskDanMoran.com is ancient history. The Internet Business Bench is the future. I’ll be posting daily about the actions I’m taking to build my business. Would you like to join me on my journey into a Brave New World of Internet business success? The first step is simple. Sign up for my new blog announcement list. It’s easy. It’s free. And I’ve even got a gift for you when you confirm your subscription. So go ahead…Subscribe Today!

What Is Your ‘Why?’

If you’re thinking about making substantial changes in your life, you must first discover your “Why.” It takes a lot of effort to break the inertia of how things are today and you’ll need a lot of motivation to sustain that effort until the job is done.

There is always a “Why” behind great people and great accomplishments. Any successful person can tell you in one sentence what drives them to be successful. They know it in their core.

And that brings us to you. What is your “why?” And remember, your “Why” has to be strong enough to motivate you to make great changes in your life.

Many people think their “Why” is money. Unfortunately, money by itself is not enough. To have money is great. But wanting money is not a strong enough motivator to get you past the ups and downs of starting your own business, being your own boss and becoming an entrepreneur.

So what do I mean by your “Why?” Here’s an example.

A woman and her husband decide after many years together to start a family. She had been a career woman all of her life and held an executive post in a big corporation. The woman had every intention of returning to work after her maternity leave. She kept in touch with the office during her time off and knew the status of every project she’d be working on when she returned.

Then came the big day. She dropped her 6-week old baby off at the baby sitter’s and headed in to work. The baby’s cries when she left replayed in her mind as she drove in to work and an overwhelming feeling of helplessness settled over her. She realized quickly that she would not be able to abandon her baby to the baby sitter for 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. In that moment, the woman had discovered her “Why,” a motivation strong enough for her to make a great change in her life. She left work early that day, picked up her baby and that night she and her husband discussed their options.

But it’s not just women who want to leave the rat race and start their own businesses. Men can find equally compelling “whys” to motivate them into action. A young man attending college, for instance, already knew that he was not going to be happy working for other people. He wanted a dynamic and challenging career and starting his own business seemed just the thing for him.

But it wasn’t just the money that fed his desire for an entrepreneurial lifestyle. His drive came from watching his father stuggle for years in a job he hated, only to have to continue to work after retirement just to support himself and his wife. The young man wanted to take care of his parents in their retirement and make a better future for himself. He had found his “Why.”

It’s scary to think that in today’s world the typical work week is now much longer than 40 hours and that retirement is not retirement at all! Even so, you have to be honest with yourself. Before you “fire your boss,” you have to find your “Why.”

It has to be something tangible. It has to be something real. It has to be something so meaningful that it keeps you awake at night and drives you during the day to keep moving toward success.

So…what is YOUR “Why?”
