What Beats Free? Another ‘Insider’ Tip
I’ve got a quick set of testing results for you. But first let me tell you why I’m conducting these tests. You see, without testing, you can never know whether or not you are leaving money on the table. Could you boost that 1% conversion rate to 2%? If so, you’ve just doubled your income! But you’ll never know unless you test.
So with that in mind, I’m testing various subject lines in my emails to determine what pulls in visitors to my blog and what doesn’t. The more often I can get a visitor to read my blog, the more opportunities I have to bond with that visitor and the more likely it is that that visitor will listen to my recommendations for affiliate products and to buy my own products as I introduce them.
And now for the results of this week’s test. You may remember an email I sent telling you about some information I picked up from JV Alert this weekend. There were two subject lines that I used:
{!firstname_fix}, a free tip from JV Alert!
…and…
{!firstname_fix}, an insider tip from JV Alert!
I was fully expecting the “free tip” subject line to out pull the “insider tip” version. Boy was I wrong. It turned out to be a close race with “insider” getting a 12.7% click through rate to beat out “free” with a 10.2% click through rate.
Why did I chose “insider” to go up against “free?” It’s another tip I picked up from JV Alert. Joshua Shafran, one of the presenters at the conference, talks about something called the “X” factor in developing an online business. It refers to your ability to build a strong relationship with your subscribers. And one way to do that is to provide them with “insider” information from time to time, to make them feel like they’re members of an exclusive club.
Is it working? How do you feel about getting these insider tips on my blog?
