What Is The Internet Business Bench?
My wife and I have a strategy for dealing with our sons when they start to misbehave. When all else fails and redirection just isn’t working, we send them to…
…THE BENCH!
(dun-dun-DAAAAHHHH)
We have them take a time-out and sit on the bench in the hall. The time-out gives the boys an opportunity to settle down and get themselves out of the middle of a situation so they can (hopefully) think about things objectively. Once the boys have had a moment to cool down, we explain clearly to them why they were sent to the bench and what we expect of them.
Of course, they are very smart and observant little dudes and they never miss an opportunity to turn the tables on Mom and Dad. For instance, a few months ago, my 4-year-old son told ME to go to the bench. He wanted me to take him and his brother to the park. I told him I was too busy to go right then. That’s when he said, “Daddy, you’re being mean. You should go to the bench!”
And you know what? He was right. I did need to go to the bench. I needed to step away from the work I was doing on my Internet business so that I could evaluate it objectively. I closed the laptop and he and his brother and I went to the park. We had a great time.
I took the next several months off from my Internet business so I could really think about what I was doing. It turns out that I didn’t have an Internet business after all. I just had a second job…working for myself! And, frankly, I wasn’t a very good boss. The benefits were lousy. The hours sucked. And once I figured out how much time I’d put into my business in 2007…well, let’s just say that the money I earned didn’t represent a very impressive return on investment.
But, instead of completely throwing in the towel, I decided to retool my Internet business. I thought…
“Hey… maybe instead of creating and maintaining free or even low-cost products that require my personal support, I should create simple, high-value products that are easy to understand and use.”
And then I thought…
“Ya know, instead of creating another job for myself, I really should create systems and procedures that anyone can follow.”
And finally I thought…
“Yeah… and once I’ve got those systems in place, I can stop playing lone wolf, martyr and all-around super stud (who happens to have no time for his wife and kids), become an effective Internet business owner, and start looking for outside resources to help me build my business.”
Genius…pure genius. And also what many people have been trying to tell me for almost a year now. People like…
James Brausch, Tim Ferriss, Fred Black, Terry Dean, Richard Lee, Robert Phillips and Aaron Brandon.
